Horticultural Therapy Classes
Introduction to Horticultural Therapy - 3 units
An introduction to the field of horticultural therapy. Learn about enabling gardens, adaptive tools and healing gardens. Learn how to use horticulture when working with specific groups of people, including the elderly, children, youth-at-risk, substance abusers, offenders, physically disabled, mentally ill and developmentally disabled individuals. Explore career options.
Horticulture for Special Populations - 3 units
Design horticultural therapy programs for a wide range of settings and populations. There will be an emphasis on greenhouse, indoor and outdoor programs, program development and assessment, research, funding and grant writing.
Garden and Nature Crafts - 1 unit
Work with flowers, foliage and herbs to create craft projects structured to meet the needs and abilities of specific populations. Seasonal and year round crafts and activities will be adapted with special modifications for all participants.
Therapeutic Landscape Design - 2 units
Learn about sensory, enabling, meditative and healing gardens. Universal design concepts, including accessible gardens and adaptive tools will be covered. Explore therapeutic garden design for pre-school settings, school age children, youth-at-risk, special populations, health care facilities, the older adult, Alzheimer's and hospice gardens.
Occupational Work Experience - 2 units - Internship
This is a class for students wishing placements in specific population settings. Program design, implementation, evaluation and problem solving will be covered in an intership chosen to meet your professional needs.
Plant Classes
Growing and Using Herbs - 1 unit
This class teaches all aspects of growing herbs - selecting, planting and caring for them. The class includes learning about culinary, medicinal, ornamental and cosmetic uses of herbs. Ways to preserve herbs and use them in crafts will be covered.
The Edible Landscape - 1 unit
The Edible Landscape teaches all aspects of the Edible Garden. Choosing plants, designing a garden, planting, caring and harvesting edible plants will be covered. The class will study vegetables, fruits, berries, citrus and nuts,.
The Flower Garden - 1 unit
All aspects of growing and caring for garden flowers will be covered. This class will focus on edible flowers, herbal flowers, cutting flowers for arrangements, growing flowers to attract wildlife, annuals, perennials, bulbs, roses and other flowering plants.
The Rose Garden - 1 unit
All aspects of growing and caring for roses will be covered. Old garden roses and modern roses will be discussed. Choosing, planting, pruning, caring for, cutting and arranging roses will be covered.
Horticulture Classes
Introduction to Horticulture - 3 units
An Introduction to Theory and Practice in Horticulture. This class will include a study of soils, pests, diseases and all aspects of plant growth.
Plant Propagation - 3 units
An introduction to plant propagation. Seed and cutting propagation, plant division and greenhouse management will be covered.
